ROCK BAND 3 UPDATE:
Keyboards, harmonies, pro guitar, pro drums, playlists – it’s all very exciting isn’t it? But who knows if Rock Band 3 will see a release in Australia? We can hope, but failing that rest assured that come the start of November 2010 Canned Geek will have a comprehensive guide to importing Rock Band 3 and all the peripherals.

In fact, here's a start already:
PS3 owners - you can pre-order the keyboard and Rock Band 3 game bundle from Gamestop.

Xbx 360 owners - order the Rock Band 3 game from Game UK and order the keyboard from Gamestop due to the 360 region lock on games. (Note however that Game just list the release date as 2010, instead of the more specific American release date of October 31st, 2010)

This article is outdated.

on importing Rock Band 2, please read here.

This is a public service announcement: do not import Rock Band 2. Unfortunately, two things have been brought to my to my attention.

Firstly, it turns out that downloadable content on both Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 is region locked. This means that if you imported Rock Band from America you can only purchase additional songs from from the American online PSN/Xbox Live stores. If you purchase a song from the Australian Rock Band store the song just won't show up in the game at all and you'll waste your money.

Secondly, Sony have stopped letting people connect Entropay with the PlayStation Network. Entropay is a virtual credit card that you could use to add funds to your American PlayStation Network account. Note that if you already connected Entropay to your PSN it'll continue to work just fine.

As a result, if you import Rock Band you'll be stuck paying in American dollars for downloadable songs. And if you import Rock Band 2 now for the PlayStation 3 there's no real way to add funds to be able to purchase songs - unless you want to import American PlayStation Network cards, which is hardly convenient or cheap.

Rock Band 1 is available now and it looks like you'd be better off just waiting for Rock Band 2. Besides, there's a few hundred downloadable songs to play while you wait for Rock Band 2 to be released. For those of us who already imported Rock Band 1 or 2, it looks like we're stuck paying American dollars for downloadable content.

My apologisies if this frustrates people who imported Rock Band following my guide , but I'm right there with you. None of this impacts the awesome fun that Rock Band is, but you'd be wise not to get yourself stuck having to pay more for downloadable content - or worse still, unable to purchase songs from the PlayStation store at all. Just wait for Rock Band 2 and enjoy Rock Band 1 or Guitar Hero World Tour in the meantime.

However, if you imported from the UK or any other PAL territory you don't need to worry about this. Additionally, you can still import Rock Band 2 peripherals - only the game has region coding.

With thanks to Josh Kington and Aznman08.

Not sure why you think Rock Band 2 songs downloaded for the 360 are region locked - they're not. I imported the PAL version of Rock Band 2 to Australia about a month ago a few weeks ago purchased 4 or 5 tracks online. They all worked as expected. Importing songs from RB1 also worked flawlessly, as did RB1 drums and GHIII guitars.

Granted the game was $140 but I'd prefer to pay more for it than purchase RB1 and wait many more months for RB2 to become available.
