COMIKAZE
When: Any 24 hour perior between 12th to 14th June, 2010
Mixing live action video with a bit of 2D character animation, this here is a one minute long trailer I produced for the MiDFur convention to mark the opening of registrations. MiDFur is a four day convention celebrating the culture surrounding anthropmorphism and animals - better known as furry.
Even if you don't consider yourself a furry, you may well be interested in one of our two esteemed guests of honour: Stan Sakai . A comic writer and artist Stan is most well known for his three-times Eisner winning comic, Usagi Yojimbo. On top of that, because the event goes for four days running all day and all night, MiDFur is one of the most social and fun conventions I know.
That said, I must admit that I volunteer as public relations and mutlimedia for MiDFur - but even so I was a huge fan of this event when I was just an attendee.
MiDFur 12: Heroes And Villains will be at Rydges On Swanston (701 Swanston Street, Melbourne) on December 2nd to 5th, 2010.
Before I tell you about how cool Doujicon was, I first need to establish a bit of history. Doujicon is a Melbourne independent comic convention that first appeared in 2006 and reinvigourated my interest in comics. The second event was the same, but smaller and the third smaller still - though I still came away with amazing comics and learnt in the panels some storytelling techniques that still stay with me to this day. Yet Doujicon always lost money and in 2009 they weren’t able to run the event. But now Doujicon has returned, thanks to it joining forces with Minifest; a smaller, preliminary version of Melbourne anime convention, Manifest.
Walking up to Doujicon was like doing the time warp again, as the event was back in its original location at Monash University in Caulfield, which is conveniently located right next to the train station and food stores. On my first pass of the con space (which spread over two floors) I realised just what the fusion of Doujicon and Minifest meant. In addition to the usual Doujicon setup of a dealers area filled with comic artists and some panel rooms, Minfest added to this a video games room, cosplay chess, a room with cel painting and model making workshops and more panel rooms. So from my perspective it was Doujicon plus more.
On this show we discuss the epic story that begun with an Appleemployee leaving behind an iPhone prototype in a bar and the death of metal legend, Ronnie James Dio. We also discuss Supanova Melbourne as well as a number of other events we attended in the past month.
